Most people who have been couponing for any length of time know where to get the free coupons they will use. A beginner on the other hand can become overwhelmed and not know where to get the coupons.

Any expert will be happy to tell them the primary source for free coupons is their newspaper. Most Sunday editions head the top of the list. However, in some areas, newspapers will mail out a special section with nothing but coupons on Wednesdays or Thursdays.

Obtain multiple copies of the inserts and by multiple I mean lots of them. The underlying objective is to obtain the copies as inexpensively as possible. It doesn’t make sense to spend dollars to save dimes.

If you are like most people, you probably already get a paper delivered to your front door or stuffed into the paper box right next to the mail box. That is your first set of inserts.

The obvious second set of inserts is from family and friends. Chances are excellent that if they know you use coupons on a regular basis, they will give you their inserts. When I say friends and family, I mean everyone from your mother, your neighbors to your friends at church and coworkers.

Not everyone lives in a house. Some people live in apartments while others live in condos. These types of complexes have sort of trash or recycle bins or boxes. Many people simply toss away that section of the paper. Because the people toss them almost immediately, they are always in good condition.

Many locales have recycling centers. People know that at these centers there are large numbers of the inserts they want. Before you start poking through the papers, ask the manager if it is okay for you to take some of the inserts.

These people also know when the carriers come to dump their extras. Not all of the papers get delivered because most papers put extra copies in the carrier’s total. Therefore these extra copies must be disposed of and the recycling center is the stop of last resort for these papers.

You can also get extra papers from the stores where these papers are sold. The unsold papers are sometimes not picked up by the carrier. These means the store must get rid of them. If you are there on Monday morning, bright and early, you may have just hit a gold mine.

By the way, for the carrier to get a credit for unsold papers, most newspapers only require the front page to be returned. You don’t want the front page anyway.

If you live in an area with hotels, motels and other businesses with a large population like restaurants that carry papers, you may have struck gold again.
Generally the population visiting these services leave the inserts. They may take the paper but they leave the inserts.

Because the Internet has become the largest source of almost everything, websites have grown up that provide printable coupons. Some sites have a limit on the number of each coupon you can print. Always read the printing instructions.

If you plan on becoming a couponer, it is wise to get as much information on the topic as you can. Getting free coupons from as many sources as possible is a very good start.

Believe it or not, some retailers will do what is called triple coupons. Don’t get too excited because this is a very rare species of couponing. The stores that will triple your coupon actually triple the value of your coupon.

What you find with this offer is that it almost always is up to a certain value. If you take the sixty cents mentioned above, a $.60 coupon would be worth $1.80 in a full triple offer.

Another way you stretch the value of your coupon is called stacking. You stack a particular store’s coupons with your manufacturer coupons. You get a manufacturer’s coupon usually through home mailers, store ads, flyers and the stores’ monthly magazines.

This practice makes it worthwhile to be on your store’s mailing list. The underlying idea to using coupons is to save money. Taking advantage of all the ways to save money only makes sense.

In this day and age, a grocery store without a loyalty card is almost non-existent. A smart shopper has a loyalty card for every store they shop. They get the card because this is often the only way a shopper will be able to take advantage of in-store and unannounced sale prices.

Sometimes stores will accept coupons that have already expired. Don’t get too excited about this savings vehicle because not many stores like the idea of taking expired coupons. Plus if the store does accept this type of coupon, the accepted expiration dates can’t be longer than from 3 months to up to 6 months out.

Another consumer bonus is the store that will accept competitor’s coupons. Some stores will even double the value of those coupons. It is a marketing tactic that benefits the consumer in several obvious ways. This type of strategy doesn’t usually run for any length of time so if you see it you best take advantage of it.

Free coupons definitely can give you your money’s worth. However, if you add the above tips and tricks to your shopping arsenal you will probably pocket more savings than you would have otherwise.

Think you know about sheets for the bedroom? With cotton bedding, the buzz word is the thread count.

Thread count refers to the number of threads in a square inch of the fabric, measuring both warp and weft (lengthwise and widthwise). People are increasingly aware that the higher the thread count, the higher quality the fabric, but this is only partly true.

If there is a high concentration of threads woven together the threads have to be fine, and this generally makes the fabric softer which is why people look for a high number. However, you can find a fabric with a lower thread count that actually feels more luxurious than one with a higher count for reasons that will become apparent later.

Also, the way thread count is worked out by some manufacturers is a bit ‘creative’ and leads to an inflated number and so the comparison between manufacturers can be difficult to work out. This is because if 2 ply yarns are used or if multiple yarns (picks) are inserted into the weft, they can be counted by some as individual threads. A single thread might be four plies when twisted together but one manufacturer will call that one thread, whilst another manufacturer will count it as four threads in a bid to record a higher number.

Apart from thread count, it is also important to look at fibre quality, yarn size and finishing.

Quality fibres are longer and a cotton fabric with these is said to be long staple. A long staple is better because longer fibres make for a finer and stronger yarn. Pima cotton is long staple and Egyptian Cotton is even longer.

With yarn size, the finer the yarn, the higher the quality. Fine yarns give a lighter and more supple fabric and they also allow for twisting together to create a 2 ply yarn.

Weaving a 2 ply yarn with too small a yarn size will result in a heavy sheet that is more like a blanket. This explains why 200 thread count cotton from a high grade fibre can feel better than 400 thread count cotton from an inferior grade cotton.

Good quality sheets will be properly finished. They will be singed (fuzz removed) and mercerised (treated to make it stronger, softer, more able to take dye and more reflective). Cheap sheets will not have undergone these processes.

Cotton is a fantastic bedding material because it is a natural product and wicks away moisture but it varies wildly in quality. With a bit of background knowledge, you can make sure that you get the best cotton sheets for your money.
